"I never really thought technology could inspire me this much. It's like when people talk about having their first acid trip and it completely changes their outlook on things. Numerology has done that for me and composition."

"hi Art, yes! thats good stuff, man! i was up messing around w/ Phatmatik Pro and Numer 1.2b9 last night for hours and hours. this combination does seem to be THE way to come up with that squarepusher-esque/autechre type sound. the new dual LFO module really goes well with Phatmatik too. im seriously becoming addicted to destroying breaks with this duo. i haven't seen anything that can do it better. props to u and James for 2 of the best new Mac audio software programs"

"The more I'm learning this sequencing environment the bigger the smile on my face."

"For me, numerology is the cutting edge of a swiss army knife in a drawer full of plastic spoons. In a world of 'new' computer music software, I find that too much is modeled on the look of the old, rather than the time-tested function of the old. This is where a new, sharp, versatile tool like Numerology shines. I like the way it is based on proven concepts like step-time sequencing, implemented in a way that is neither 'retro', nor prescriptive.

I use Numerology in conjunction with Live by Ableton, and Reason by Propellerheads, and I find the three play together very nicely. I find that the continually modulating, organic output of Numerology offsets the repetition and 'block changes' of the other softwares nicely. I am also experimenting with using Numerology to act as a controller for other softwares, allowing the stochastic output to provide interesting structural variation.

They say in the jazz world that "the right note is only a half step away". Well, I think Numerology gives you the tools to move that half step if you are in a looping rut! It often surprises me with a new melody or phrase, where other software would simply loop and loop and loop until I am disheartened.

Numerology provides a growing number of options to let the music grow by itself, is VERY reliable and even has an interesting name. Five12 rocks loops."

"With traditional MIDI applications, making sequenced music, like Kraftwerk, Tangerine or P. Glass, is very boring! For those who want to make this kind of music, it's vital to use a hardware analog-sequencer which has the right "mood". Now, with "Numerology", I can just use a Macintosh! So, I want to thanks James for his intuition and for giving me the pleasure to work with this appication."

What has Numerology done for me?

  • Kept me up for 40-someodd hours the first time I got my hands on it
  • Put about $1k worth of gear out of a job in my studio
  • Replaced 3 of the five Reaktor ensembles I've built specifically for crazy sequencing tricks
  • Reduced the amount of time it takes me to accomplish many of my sequencing secrets by 2x - 10x
  • Finally made me a laptop musician when I need to be
  • Scared the crap out of me, for now everyone will clearly stumble on the tricks that once used to be as cantankerous as herding housecats ;-]

Very rarely does a tool come along that makes me feel like I'm going to be able to produce more, higher quality music using less \ time, while at the same time giving me new worlds to explore."
