View Full Version : Evolve - note locking

Hi,
Firstly to say I'm loving N3 - Numerology keeps on improving. Impressive programming.
I think Evolve is a really interesting concept and I was wondering if you could add an option to lock notes - i.e. say I wanted the first and 5th notes to remain fixed and unchanging but allow all the others to Evolve. ( thinking here of the drum sequencer)
I was thinking you could do this by grouping notes according to colour.
You could extend this by getting Evolve to effect set groups of notes in different ways.
So in this pic you have different sets of coloured notes (user specified) that would then be treated differently by Evolve.

Actually what I was thinking was to limit Evolve to steps that have been selected (using the "sel" buttons just below the sequence). How does that sound?
Cheers,
Jim
Hello,
the idea with the steps that have to be selected sounds great for evolve but couldn t this also be used for the generate?

I guess using existing interface elements would be quicker to implement from an programming aspect - but using the top row of a note sequencer only gives one set of selected notes to interact with Evolve. Admittedly you could vary the selected notes via setting up different playlist presets...
... - but then adding another way of tagging sets of notes via colour groups could make for some interesting note processing options inside Numerology.
i.e. if the sequencers or note generators tagged notes with a colour then you would have another dimension in how you filtered, randomized and evolved the developing note sequences.
Anyway - whatever you decide - it's all good. :)

For anything where random step picking is involved, yes, but it would be quite tedious to program it for the "cell" based algorithms, which really work better over the full span of the sequencer anyway.
Cheers,
Jim

Yes, definitely an interesting approach... be patient... ;)

I was looking for something like this.
It would also be useful to have a preset save the state of the auto evolve on/off.
This way I can always go back to my main sequence.

+1 @Sifaka - it's a 'must have' I think :)
It would also be useful to have a preset save the state of the auto evolve on/off.
I'll add a request for that.
Keep in mind that evolve can also be triggered via ParamMod, which gives you a number of interesting options, such as triggering at odd intervals, changing the trigger behavior per preset etc...
One other trick I've started using with the DrumSeq is to use two modules, one for evolving parts, the other for fixed parts -- that way I can let the cymbals, hats, etc get all crazy, while keeping the snare and BD steady -- or have them get weird as well while still having a steady beat under it all.
Cheers,
Jim
