View Full Version : SoundToys version 3.1 with problems
Hello
the test of the SoundToys version 3.1 showed me the following problem:
You could not load any Factory AU presets from Numeology. There is no factory button to see in the module.
Beside this the Plugins work great and sound very good for me.
The Crystallizer retro pitch-shifting reverse echo reminds me my old H3000 from eventide and the EchoBoy comes with the feeling from the past by selecting the sound from old echounits down to the Oilcan Echo from the 1950s.
The work around for the missing Factory AU presets is:
Open the plugin in Logic and save the preset as AU preset.
This Au preset could be loaded the from Numerology from the load button.
The website of says that there will be a better Preset handling in the next version of the Plugins, because they have a lot of ready presets for each module.

Hi Jue
I have been testing a few plugins and maybe it's not the soundtoys plugins problem, but numerology2. If you load the same plugin in Numerology1, the presets are there and this happens with a few more like alphakanal synth.
Here's what I've found: Neither SoundToys or Automat comes with 'factory' plugins in the AU sense, they just come with presets that are installed in a spot that Numerology's AU preset browser doesn't see at first.
For an Audio Unit, the definition of 'factory' preset is very specific: They are stored 'within' the plugin, and a host can make specific API calls to find them. Not very many plugins actually support this feature. What they tend to do is come with a bunch of presets, and have a custom preset browser within the plugin for you to browse them. Zebra2 is a good example of this. Soundtoys is a bit unique in that it installs presets, but has no built-in preset browser.
The 'standard' AU preset mechanism for non-factory presets is based around reading and writing .aupreset files, which can be stored in either of two locations:
/Library/Audio/Presets/<manuf dir>/<plugin dir>/
or
<your home dir>/Library/Audio/Presets/<manuf dir>/<plugin dir>/
This is a side-effect of the way OS X's overall file system is structured, and though I understand the reasoning, I find its use for AU Presets to be very annoying, as it means that AU presets can always be either in one spot or the other, never always in the same place.
When you install SoundToys, it places its preset library within the first of those two directories. However, Numerology's default location to look for .aupreset files is the second location. I made this choice as I'd much rather have my presets stored within my home dir, rather than a root-level system directory that I'm not likely to remember to backup (TimeMachine or not).
The .aupreset browser Numerology opens is a generic file browser, so you can always retarget it to a new directory, but that is time-consuming. A better option is to just go to the Finder and copy the Soundtoys presets from their original directory to the equivalent one within your home directory. You only have to do that once.
In the case of Automat, there were preset files in the download, but no installer, so I just copied them myself into the "home-dir" based AU presets dir.
I'm working on a design for a better AU preset browser that will be added to Numerology later, and hopefully will avoid all this confusion...
Best,
Jim
Hello,
Thank you for this Jim.
Made a manual copy and it works via the load button in Numerology
