Adding some texture goes a long, looong way towards improving the usability.
I'm still tweaking configurations. I've found a few useful setups. I like dividing it into 4x4 by putting something at each corner. You then get a 2x2 block in the middle. In this center quadrant I use stickers with 1,2,3 and 4 bumps, but you could do 1,3,2 and 4 if that's how your brain works. It helps to keep this numbering system with the center and horizontal rows as but it isn't crucial.
You don't need to put a marker in the ne,nw,se or se corners, but it doesn't hurt.

With my hand size I can use my thumb and pinky to quickly get my bearings and position my other fingers accordingly.
Putting a marker five down and five over is useful too. Sometimes extreme sectioning off of the Launchpad feels constraining.
Some have large type too which can be useful as well.
I feel like texture is a secret weapon. It's given new life to my BCR2000 as well! Take that ipad!
