This is the first public build with the VST (mac only) and several other new features. Some of the Launchpad-related goodies (realtime recording and CV/Gate Seq support) are still in progress, thus this is definitely not the final 3.1 release. There are lots o fixes also, see the Release Notes for all the details. Many thanks those those who helped with the private testing phase of this release cycle....

[Note: changed to link to Build 42, which fixes a ReWire issue...]

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Numerology 3.1 (Build 41)
Primary New Features:
- Numerology VST : There is now a VST version of Numerology that you can install. This is now the recommended option for any OS X host that supports VST, as all VST hosts (that I know of) support MIDI out from the plugin.
- MonoNote & DrumSeq : Realtime Recording Improvements : The realtime recording functions have been re-written to be more accurate. In particular, the recording algorithm will tie held notes in the MonoNote, making it much more useful. Polynote support will be coming soon.
- Launchpad : MonoNote : Realtime Recording The "Play" page now works. When navigating to this page (via the 2nd scene button from the top on the Launchpad), the MonoNote will go into realtime recording mode. On the Launchpad's grid, you get a 4-octave keyboard to play on. Any button that is not mapped to a keyboard note acts as an "erase" button.
- Launchpad : DrumSeq : Realtime Recording : The "Play" page now works. When navigating to this page (via the 2nd scene button from the top on the Launchpad), the DrumSeq will go into realtime recording mode. On the Launchpad's grid, the bottom row of buttons acts as "erase" buttons. The other buttons will trigger notes for each track, one track per column. As you play 'higher up' on the grid, the generated note will have more velocity.
- Launchpad : All Note Sequencers, added buttons to control Generate & Evolve. They show up on the 4th row (down) on the SeqCtl page. Red for Generate, and Three Green buttons for Evolve.
- Launchpad : DrumSeq, the bottom row of the SeqCtl page now has buttons to mute individual drum tracks.
- Launchpad : CV/Gate Seq support : support for these modules is nearly complete, stay tuned...
- Online Features : 30-day trial, auto-check for new versions, built-in bug reporting and feature requests.
Fixes and Updates:
(build 41)
- ReWire : I changed the 'device name' when running in ReWire mode to Numerology3RW, to avoid confusion with the plugins...
- MonoNote, PolyNote, ChordSeq : the GateOut CV is now muted whenever a step is muted.
(build 40.7)
- Added a 'five12 feedback' button to the AU & VST -- it is the mail icon next to the five12 logo...
- GrooveClock: The GrooveAmount param is not available for modulation.
- AudioDelay: Fixed a timing calculation error with Milliseconds, added "TenthMillis" measurement.
- Fixed a problem with NI Maschine and its I/O configuration.
- Changed the I/O config menus for AU's to present the 'more fancy' -- and likely the most used -- options first.
- Fixed a problem in Cubase that could generate a loud buzzy output.
- Fixed a problem related to importing stacks with MIDI In modules.
- The Log file for the AU and VST is now called "NumerologyPluginLog.txt"
- You can now edit the contents of the Commentary module.
- Fixed a stereo audio conflict between the AudioSwitch and RingMod modules.
- Fixed a drawing issue related to skip, select and mute steps with sequencers longer than 16 steps.
- Fixed a scale-mapping issue with Minor and Locrian modes in the ChordSeq
(build 40.5)
- Transport confirmed to work in Cubase.
- Fixed a problem whereby the 'demo dialog' would not allow you to authorize either the AU or VST plugins.
- Fixed various issues with window resizing.
- The default height of the editor windows for both the AU and the VST is now just enough to display a full MonoNote module.
- Fixed a crash in the AudioSwitch 4x1 and 8x1 modules.
- Fixed some problems related to the new CV Switch modules.
- Fixed an error message when saving a stack with the DrumSeq in it.
- Stack Preset Snapshots now works with the Launchpad (Hold 'User2', push 'Session')
- Cleaned up some internals when closing the UI, hopefully to avoid some issues.
(build 40.4)
- The transport (and thus the plugin overall) now works in AudioMulch.
- Fixed a crash when using the on/off switch for the stack.
- Fixed a problem with the step name mode and background stripe settings on the MonoNote.
- Fixed a problem with the N3 AU & VST whereby the UI was not updated as frequently as it should be.
- Fixed a problem with a 'stuck editor window' in StudioOne.
- Fixed a problem whereby 'number boxes' would not respond to keyboard input.
- Fixed several logging calls that were causing CPU issues.
- Fixed a problem with poly-chords in the Keyboard module.
Jim, you are a machine! Thank you!
Can you describe what this really means?
"- Launchpad : CV/Gate Seq support : support for these modules is nearly complete, stay tuned..."
Also, what do you think about ModulationSeq on the Launchpad? Step sequenced modulation is killer! Thanks so much.
I don't see anything in this update about Windows?
Also, be careful letting Windows users into your inner circle...
Just to be clear, this is a Mac-only VST -- The Numerology UI is written in Objective C and Cocoa, neither of which exist in any usable form on Windows. I'd love to be able to push a button and have all of it cross-compile to Windows, but that task is not something I plan to approach at this time.
Cheers,
Jim
It means that if you are using a Launchpad, you will see those modules and will be able to partially edit them, but they are note completely done.
And yes, there will be support for the ModSeq as well as the IntervalSeq and GateSeq.
Cheers,
Jim
I've been doing the image thing these days, but now Numerology is getting fired up.. I just downloaded and started the new build 41 and am intrigued with the new Play/record funtion on the Launchpad..
Thanks for your continued development of this already potent package.
Jim,
I installed the new 3.1 update and the Numerology VST shows up in the OSX plugin directory but not in Live 8.2.2 VST directory. Any ideas?
OK, hopefully I'm just being stupid, but how does one route midi tracks from ableton to specific midi channels on the new vst? When I select the channel with the vst as the output from a midi track, I can only select 1-NumerologyVST. With the audio unit I had a selection of 16 channels...
I haven't tested with Lion yet, so you're sort-of on your own there until I can get it installed...
Lion? that's your problem right there. ableton has news on an update to Live. it's on their site. some issues w/Lion and lot's of apps.
that's what happens when you desire to be on the bleeding edge of updates. things break :(
I'll poke around a bit but I don't know if Ableton will allow more than one stream of MIDI events from a VST, or if it allows you to filter by Channel. The "1" in "1-NumerologyVST" refers to the track number, not the MIDI channel. You can always modify the channel generated by MIDI source in Numerology on the generating module (MonoNote, DrumSeq, NoteGen, etc). The reason that the N3 AU behaves differently is because it uses a completely different way to transmit MIDI.
I installed the new 3.1 update and the Numerology VST shows up in the OSX plugin directory but not in Live 8.2.2 VST directory. Any ideas?
The N3 VST gets installed to:
/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST
This is the only location I plan to support for the VST, otherwise there is no way to know which version will load, or to know where to install an update. If the plugin doesn't show up in Live in the "Local" VST folder, then try a re-scan.
Cheers,
Jim
In Live there's a line drawn through the module lib at the bottom edge if you open enough folders that you have to scroll down to see more.
I can't add any parameters to Live's Device panel.
In the standalone:
Trackpad scrolling doesn't work if your cursor is over the module scroll bar itself. Can't scroll presets in preset view or mixer view.
I'm getting a gap in my wire where the name appears. For example go to routing drag VCAs on top of each other. It happens after 2-4 times. The cables "break" when you click on a module name, but if you scroll afterwards then when you click on a module above or below the cabling breaks then too. Also, it disables anti-aliasing and they get all jaggy.
In polynote if you make it xxl there is a white bar between mute and skip at the top.
In poly note you can't scroll at all if your cursor is in the note parameters section( gate, velocity, ch pressure etc)
Launchpad:
In polynote enter some notes with the launchpad then in a new range enter a note with the mouse and keep hitting "section" right on the launchpad it will travel beyond where it should go and the range of notes entered with the launchpad will appear visually offset as well as play off time.
Sometimes Polynote isn't geting cleared on the Launchpad on starting a new file.
Functionality:
Could we get modules placed above/on the audio switcher to automatically connect to the next (free?) input instead of all going to input one? At least while it has unused ins. Or maybe a toggle to disable auto wiring, so I don't have to hold option.
Personally, I'd like it if when you scroll with your cursor over a knob it starts moving w/o clicking, but having to click first would be fine too. Right now it does nothing so you have to click +hold + drag.
ETA: A loop setting of 1 only works when you have selected that preset or the one directly above it when you start the transport. With 4 presets if you activate loop 1 on preset 3 and start playing from 1 nothing will happen, but it will work if you start from 2 or 3.
ETA2: Oh yeah If you collapse all your routing with the 6 ◆ button and then open one back up you get cabling to nowhere, that is cables to the main ins and outs that are now hidden.
Nothing too serious.
Thanks for the update!
Thanks very much for taking the time to document all this... I've confirmed a couple already, will go through the rest later today. FYI: the reason you can't add any params to Live's Device panel is that there are no published parameters yet -- I'm still having an internal argument about how to approach them. There are two issues: N3 stacks can have a huge number of parameters -- and that list changes every time a module is added or removed, and the VST 2.4 spec doesn't seem to support a variable number of params.
I'm absolutely loving the ability to use ModulationSeq from the Launchpad, had a great 5 hour session controlling pitch params on an analogue kick and tom via the Launchpad, while sequencing the drum hits from the machine itself.
My only bug report so far is that in ModulationSeq you cannot turn the vertical sliders go all the way down to 0 from the Launchpad.
i know - basically i'm happy with Lion so far - don't know what happend with Audio/Midipart - man Apps have problems now
Live works ok (without using ext. midi-sync) and the AU version of Numerology runs quite well
just the VST version has this problem when running audio in 96kHz
Jim,
I installed the 3.1 version on 3 computers: OSX 10.6.8, OSX 10.5.7 and OSX 10.5.8. Only the OSX 10.6.8 computer was able to access the Numerology VST plugin in Live 8.2.2.
I guess will probably need to update my OS soon.
