The reason I want a longer sequence is because I have these really long sustained notes that evolve over time; each note can be up to 16 or 32 measures long. I tried creating 32 long notes of 4 beats and then set the gate parameter in the polynote sequencer to 1 so they are all tied together. I then apply a variety of filters, modulations and other effects to morph the sound.

Is there a better way to create long, sustained notes?

The deal with 32 measures long is a breeze . Just set the clock division thats on the left hand panel of every sequencer. The clock divisions have some of the largest range of any sequencer I've seen you can set them up to 4 whole notes. that gives you your 32 measures after just eight sequencer steps.. As far as setting a bunch of gates to tied, you might notice at the buttom of the first event lane of every sequencer there is a little select drop down here you can selcect all steps then move them into tied position. Remember to unselect the notes again, if you decide to do detailed editing..

One last thing about the long notes there is also a NoteLength parametre lane to be found on the Mononote, polynote drumseq, and matrix sequencers. here you change the note length on a per step basis from 1/16 of the sequencers base value and up to 4x the sequencers base value, so with a clock div of 4 whole notes plus a note length setting x4 you would be able to achieve 16 bars out of just one step if you should so desire.

And don't forget the simple action of slowing the whole project tempo down to 30, 20, or even 10 BPM.

Then just change your modulation speeds at the Lfos, mod sequencers and so on, so here it becomes interesting perhaps to use 1/256 to make modulations.

Little thought experiement how easy would it be to set up a real long note lasting days.

128 step sequencer with a setting of clock divi 4 whole notes and with the NoteLenght set to 4X could last 2048 bars, now at a tempo of 10 beats per minute you could have a note that last 2048 minutes, is that long enough? No? Then it's time to use a CV switch which in turn would be set to manual trigger mode and take it's trigger from the first sequencer in a chain of four of these sequencers (for a start) so you could have a note lasting 8192 minutes or 136.33 hours thats 5.6 days. I think I'd bring along a big bag of popcorn and the worlds largest coke to that Concert, sleeping bag too.
