View Full Version : numerology on iphone/ipod touch
i had a dream last night that i drag and drop the modules in numerology on my iphone;-)
to be honest it would be awesome to work with iphone version of num.what do you think?
Kinda awesome, other than trying to squeeze all that UI into such a tiny screen...
you are right. but maybe a (very)lite version operates. i just thought that i could knock up some ideas underway or so.
do you know beatmaker? its a tiny sequencer for iphone/i pod touch. so please take a look at this app. it`s worh it.

Just an idea : a player for Numerology on Iphone which can import NM files programmed on your Mac. Just a very basic interface that support CC, Program Change, preset change, no audio, no rewire, no AU of course. Thus the Iphone could become the lightest modular sequencer ever made. Very useful for live.

numerology on iphone hosting Zebra and Absynth (Absynth for surround textures) - that would be nice ...
but maybe ... just maybe there is a difference between a toy and a tool ....
But something like that would be really cool, especially if sequencers get copy&paste ...

About my NM player, no need of the classic interface of Numerology, just a screen to watch only the CC, PG and the presets. A really simple and light app to read and play Numerology's files on Iphone with Midi gears.
I insist because it could become really awesome on Iphone.

with MIDI gear? Does iPhone have a MIDI connector? Do not understand ...

iPhone OS 3 opens up the dock connector, which is basically a USB port with "extra stuff", to 3rd party developers. So I expect that by the end of the year, you'll see announcements for pro-level audio and midi interfaces.

For audio they already exist. See e.g. DIDock (http://www.smproaudio.com/produkte/di-boxen/didock-docking-station-di-fuer-mp3-player.html) (from the same guys as VFX).
that took my breath away:

anyhow i will try it :)

Yeah, and free plug for desktop too!
I started doing some preliminary OSC work, and amusingly enough, TouchOSC on the iPhone is the most convenient controller to work with.... ;)

I would also LOVE an iphone version of Numerology, transmitting & receiving MIDI (and midi clock) over the wireless like some of the other iphone midi apps do, you could do some really cool live stuff with it. All it would need would be a preset config (for starters at least with say 3 Mono-notes, one poly note and one drum sequencer, or just one of each. If you could patch in things like LFO cv mod FROM and TO Numerology on the Mac, you could develop a crazy interactive system where Numerology on the mac was modulating numerology on the phone and vice versa.
In my experience, if you are in close proximity, you get pretty good MIDI over wifi - my experiments were with the apple built-in midi-over-network drivers, a laptop and Ableton Live - for instance, I had live on a G4 mac clock synced to live on my mac mini, just with the metronome running on both. The further you walk away the more latency between the two, but if you are within 10 feet it should be fine.
Two options could be:
1. Numerology on iPhone directly outputs midi to macintosh server which sends midi to external synths
2. Numerology on iPhone syncs with Numerology on mac and only transmits and receives CV type signals (and clock sync) with mac
Anyway, could be a fun thing. Hard to balance my enthusiasm for my new iPhone against that list of cool features you are planning to implement! Maybe you could subcontract out the dev to someone else for an iPhone app?

I've had TouchOSC on my phone for a couple of month with no real ideas on what to do with it. Tonight while bicycling it occurred to me that with the new version of TouchOSC one could build a custom set-up with a lot of the weird little slider controllers that have little use in any other program. Some of the eight-slider mixers would work, and some knobs and buttons for things like the LFOs and stuff. The fact that each step-slider in Num. is MIDI assignable adds value!
I have a small bit of banging-head-against wall that I'll post in a new topic, but I will now stop wondering what kind of hardware it would take me to set up a live/studio controller for Numerology. I've had it this whole time on my telephone. Go figure.
I hope to make something, maybe record the making of that something, and post the results soon.

I'd be happy with a handful of MonoNote stacks and some simple built-in synths/effects myself :D

If the iTablet is the iTouch OS, then it could be coded for both.

Oh, I'd do something much more interesting than just that... ;)

Interesting -- I wonder what API they use for the apps, there's no CoreMIDI in the current iPhone OS...

iPad then?... unlike the phone it seems to be able to use midi over bonjour networks! :D
Another option is to just create a controller for the full version of Numerology. Somewhere between the Lemur (or TouchOSC MIDIPad) and a Launchpad. Open customization something like the TouchOSC editor would be superb.

Just a heads up in case you haven't noticed (and you porbably have...), CoreMIDI is going to be in iOS before too long. Not that I'm a numerology user now, but having seen numerology in action I'd LOVE to see it on the iPad in some form - it'd fill a real gap in the available apps I think. Fingers crossed CoreMIDI will fix the lack of midiclock support on the Line6 mobilizer too...
