View Full Version : quantize to multiples of a beat

The quantize feature (for preset recall) is really nice. But the current options (none, beat, bar) are too limiting. I like doing bar quantizing because I have more time to switch up my presets exactly the way I want. But part of Numerology's draw is the ease with which we can setup patterns of different lengths for polyrhythms/polymeter. So one stack might be in 4/4 while another is in 5/4. Unfortunately there is only one time signature for the transport, so if I'm quantizing to the bar in 4/4 then the 5/4 stack will switch presets sorta randomly in the middle of the pattern depending on the current transport time. My only choice right now is to use beat quantizing.
I'd like to be able to quantize to a multiple of a beat. So in my example I would set one stack to quantize to beat*4 and the other to beat*5.

definitely +1
that already was a problem with Num 1 ....
best
Hmm, yes, good point. Putting that on my list...

Cool.
I was thinking about this issue more and I wonder if we could take this idea even further...
It's really difficult trying to synchronize patterns of arbitrary lengths in a live setting. I've never seen (or been able to make) software that handles it gracefully, but I think Numerology might be in a position to do it well. Could it be possible to have a preset quantize mode where preset changes only occur when a certain signal is received (like a CV value > 0)? Then, what if the sequencer modules could send such a signal whenever they loop (maybe it's just a matter of detecting when a sequencer is on step number 1, which I think may already be possible, but that might actually be an audio buffer too late??). Anyway you probably see where I'm going with this: allowing us to use any sequencer module to control the timing of preset switches. Then we could mix and match different pattern lengths within a single rack and switch presets only at the end of each pattern. Seems pretty useful!
Obviously that's a lot more complicated so I wouldn't expect to see such a feature any time soon, and I'd still like to have the ability to quantize to multiples of a beat in the meantime. Just thinking aloud :D

Hmm, that would be quite tricky, but I'll keep it on my list of things to look at.

Oh, btw, that could only work if the CV trigger came from some stack previous to the stack having its preset changed. Having a stack change it's own preset in a time-accurate manner is not really possible -- not completely impossible, just absurdly difficult.

Jim
