View Full Version : ableton latency issue
in ableton live8, under prefs->midi/sync
any changes to the latency on numerology i/o
produce no results.
right now im running about 36.5 ms and
cannot change it.
just found this...
http://five12.net/showthread.php?t=308&highlight=sync
i still do not understand why i cannot select a value for
delay compensation on the incoming midi from numerology.
I think you may just need to set the offset to be negative:
I got the midi latency in Ableton Live while using midi clock almost perfect by tweaking the midi clock sync delay, is there a similiar option in Logic? On my machine I had to set it to about -38 ms but now everything i play out of numerology almost exactly lines up with the grid... hope this helps... I know Jim recomended a plugin that compensates for midi latency...
That is the last post in this thread:

Thanks,
Jim

i'm having the same issues here too (ableton 8 midi sync offset not making a difference).
is there anything i should be setting up in numerology first? in the sync setup page i've selected the IAC Driver 1 for midi in & out....
i'm using numerology 2.1 & ableton 8.0.3
...also is there a way to reset the (virtual) midi ports that numerology sees? for example in the sync setup page its still seeing various midi ports that i've now changed or deleted, such as automap & other iac ports i had before...?
thanks.

i should add that this is when using numerlogy as a rewire app.... i've just tested out using numerology as the midi master (not rewire), and i've managed to get the midi delay pretty close....
so my next question is...
is there anyway to offset the incoming midi when numerology is a rewire app?
and...
when numerology is not a rewire app. what is the best way to sync numerology to ableton. who is better at being master/slave. so far numerology went a bit crazy tempo wise when set as slave...
so for the bombardment of questions.
Hello,
for a new patchbay please throw away the PatchbaySetup.nmo file you can find here:
~/Library/Application Support/Five12/Numerology/PatchbaySetup.nmo
With the next start of Nummerology it is built up new with the actual settings.
best
jue
so my next question is...
is there anyway to offset the incoming midi when numerology is a rewire app?
Ableton has per-track delays, which is the easiest way to compensate for the inevitable delays you get when sending MIDI from one app to another.
Another way to minimize the inter-app delay is to use shorter audio buffers (if CPU load allows).

First off, there's a bug in 2.1 related to transport looping, which will be fixed in a few days. If you're seeing tempo weirdness, check for MIDI Clock loops (such as one of the apps both sending and receiving MIDI clock). If you're not sure what's up, just email me privately with screenshots of your settings.
If you're using Num 2.1 and you are on 10.5.6, I would currently recommend that you use MIDI Clock with Numerology as master. If you're on Tiger (10.4), then probably MTC will work better, see the doc for all the details: http://five12.com/doc/Sync.html
Once the 2.1 transport loop bug is fixed, using the sync offset in Ableton with it as the MIDI Clock master should give you the best timing w.r.t. MIDI transmission.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi guys, thanks for the help!
Thanks for the tip on deleting the patchbay file, that's cleaned up the midi ins/outs ports available.
Your absolutely right Jim, i had a midi clock loop going which was causing numerology to freak out. Sorted now, it behaves fine when in slave mode (using 10.5.6)....having said that, it's far easier to offest the midi delay when numerology is the master (-48ms) whereas, when it's the slave i can't lock down a correct offest (it differs randomly everytime i try to readjust....this may be the bug you mentioned..??). I'd prefer to have ableton as the master, although it's not a big issue really.

by the way. numerology is fantastic. quite possibly the best software i've ever bought. considering its price, it's an absolute steal! thank you jim (and anyone else involved).

Awesome, thanks! There are also many folks on this forum that have
made great contributions with their suggestions, bug reports, and
testing help, so thanks got to them as well! :)
And do keep me up to date on your integration adventures. I recognize
this as being a very important issue.
Cheers,
Jim
