View Full Version : Sample & Hold module acting as a shift register
Hello,
here are my dancing bells to demonstrate how it is possible to make harmonies and selected melodies from one IntervalSeq with the help of the Sample & Hold module acting as a shift register.
The IntervalSeq feeds the Sample & Hold and several CVs are taken from there after a few shifts. Together with a gate signal they are feed into a NoteGen.
This is done four times for differend shift times.
At the end the MIDI OUTs come together in the Apple DLS synth.
The same idea was done with the velocity part of this patch.

wow thats what I'm talking about! thats awesome! I just have no idea how it works. awesome work.
That example is a form of what some folks call "Klee" sequencing, which does take a while to understand. I consider it to be one of those techniques that takes a few simple concepts and uses it to build something that is almost 'alive' when running -- you can't really know everything that is happening, just that you interact with it, and it interacts back.
Here are a couple references:
The best step-by-step description is this pdf:

A couple other pages to look at:

Thanks so much for posting that PDF... incredible... I've been reading it this morning. I only wish it was pronounced "CLEEEE" instead of "CLAY".... that was dissapointing.
I can't thank you all enough... Numerology is really opening me up to a lot of possibilities with my computer music... I haven't really taken the modular approach since college where we had a huge room filled with modular synths... they're kind of expensive and my soldering skills are kind of terrible... what a great alternative.
Hello
For a more easy klee-simulation please have a look to the

The S&H Shift Register is such a fun module! It just taught me what S&H can be used for, and now my mind explodes!

Indeed! A friend in Santa Fe who used a Serge modular (among other things) to score some well-known IMAX films is a big fan of using shift registers for sequencing...

I also use S&H modules for all sorts of things. One thing I love using them for is to 'quantize' live modulations. E.g. whenever I use a FaderBox to control some ParamMods, I insert S&H's after its outputs and drive them with (for example) a 16th pulse, so all modulations are sync'ed to 16ths.

This is badass! Thank you, Sjoerd.
