View Full Version : Midi Learn For Preset Functions

Hello, I would like to request actual midi learn for loading presets and possibly even for preset snap.
Currently, you can manually enter a note # or program change, but when I assign these notes to the buttons on my BCR, they don't light up to reflect which preset is chosen, I'm guessing that this may be remedied by midi CC learn on the presets?

I also have to say that the only other thing left is to make a 'blip' happen on each step so you can visually see where the steps are happening(maybe on the step mutes or whatever they are called), then my BCR will be just like a hardware sequencer (but better!).

That sounds odd, I'll look into that. Remember that preset changes are quantized to the bar by default.
Cheers,
Jim

What MIDI message is required to do that?
Cheers,
Jim

It could be because they are program changes/notes that are just sent and not midi CC values, which are kept & re-transmitted by N2?

Good question! You know what I mean though, yes? To have that chase 'blip' go across your sequencer, so you can follow which step you are on.
Maybe it would send a quick 0 then 127 message then send the current value?
Note mutes on the sequencers seem to be a convenient choice.
On the BCR(for instance), you could assign one row of buttons to note mutes and the other to preset select. The note mutes could 'blip' to show the position of the sequence. Of course, it could be shown any any control that makes sense.

I was going to make a separate thread for this, but here we are! I would like for there to be an option for assignable CC's for selecting presets. Also, yes, It would be very helpful to have midi learn for preset selection.
And for the CC's, actually, I think it would be great to be able to directly select presets with CC #s, and not have send low-to-high gates. For instance, preset 1 would turn on when CC # 27's value is 1, preset 2 when CC27's value is 2, and so on. most midi controllers have increment/decrement options or ability to spend specific controller values, so this would be easy to implement and wouldn't require using a whole swath of controller numbers or note numbers to switch presets.
also, could the quantization for pattern switching be customizable? It seems like when there are patterns of different lengths, sometimes the pattern switching behavior is inconsistent. Or, even cooler, there could be a "trigger" input on some sort of 'preset' module that would let the user set up exactly when the toggle happens, i.e. linked to the first note of a specific module.
and yes, ability to send midi on preset changes would be great as well, because this would allow me to update the display on my novation launchpad on pattern switching.
Thanks!

I would like to append "gate" mode to presets, similar to how Ableton clips work.
If you are pressing a note that is assigned to a preset, it plays. If not, it stops.

BTW - I have my BCR 2000 8 step X 4 drum sequencer up and running with Live.
I have been sending note messages from clips from Live via my APC 40 to select N2 presets that I edit with my BCR.
I even have "blips" going out to one of the rows of LED buttons on the BCR. The button leds will not turn off until you give a velocity 0 note to stop it, so I have 2 poly notes, one sends the 127 velocity, the second sends 0 velocities one step behind the first.
With Jim's recent fixes to CC reflection, I think I will try to score a second BCR and go for a full hands-on 16 step sequencer with switching patterns, etc...

BTW - My next project is to try out the Novation Launchpad...

Have noted -- I'm guessing in that case that the stack should just mute itself when the note is off...

What type of message to you use to address the LEDs?

The easiest way to send the "blips" was to assign each button to a note value and send notes out to the BCR from N2 (using a 2nd midi out).
I had to make 2 Poly Notes (could have been mono notes also). One to send the notes, and one to send notes with velocities of zero right after the original notes (because the BCR is silly and will only turn off the LED once it receives a low velocity note).
One thing I noticed was that there is no way to disable a controller in N2? I am running the APC 40 in Live, and don't want it sending messages to N2. Setting it to "offline" seems to do no good, and I get controller conflict weirdness like my track # volume in Live also controlling a step value in N2, etc...

BTW -I just opened the Novation Launchpad, and its user modes seem kinda weird, they send note messages, but I don't see a way to program it to send different velocities or control the lights. I don't know if Novation will make an editor later, or if it will stay being a mostly Live/Max device...

In Live, the clip actually stops and goes back to zero, but muting would not be a bad behavior.

I plan to get one for testing....
