Be able to import midi files?
And will it retain the pitch, note length and groove of the midi files? Plus controller data?
Obviously numerology is supposed to be where we compose stuff however it would be awesome to be able to use it to manipulate existing midi clips.
The ability to separate groove info (velocity, note length and timing) as separate sequences could be interesting.
Am thinking of this as a cool way to get numerology grooving.
I know it was somehting you talked about a while back Jim, was wondering whether this is a feature we shall see in the short term?
thanks!
I can't say yet -- certainly I'd like to be able to get it in, but I don't want to promise something and not be able to deliver. Right now my focus is on finishing up several other features. I can say that MIDI file recording will almost certainly happen.
Cheers,
Jim

Hi Jim,
Cool stuff, I guess there are workarounds - get the melodic structure working in numerology then print the midi in ableton and apply live's grooves would be one way. . .
Still the ability to mess with the groove sequence lengths and separate out the elements and have them run across each other at different rates could be super interesting (or sound like crap, who knows. . .)
Flexible management of groove timing is definitely something I've been thinking about.... ;)
Also, btw, even if MIDI 'input' to sequencers (i.e. drag n drop MIDI clips) doesn't make it into 3.0, it probably will in 3.1...
Cheers,
Jim

I have thought of something else -
Is it possible to have the chords on a midi file dictate what notes the other sequencers can play?
I.e. it constrains the pitches to notes in and related to the chord playing.
As I am writing this I realise that for it to work out the related pitches it would require analysis of the piece of music (a la synfire) but if it constrained to the pitches of the imported midi and then had the option per step / chord change to add extra notes (i.e. not in the chord or sequence of notes but perhaps musically related) and then have these show up on a sequencer then that would be pretty awesome.
I guess I am looking for something that would work in a similar way to Synfire but that was a bit more user friendly :)
That would definitely require a significant level of musical analysis -- suggesting perhaps a separate module to to real-time analysis on played notes, but that's a whole new 'can-o-worms' that I'm not quite ready to dig into yet.
In the meanwhile, you can at least use incoming notes to set the pitch values available to the MatrixSeq -- there are several different note assignment algorithms available (see the MIDI Transpose param in the "Module Run Mode Settings" dialog). You should find the 'cyclic' option to be very interesting. For more info, check out the doc: http://five12.com/doc/MatrixSeq.html

Hi Jim,
Thanks for pointing us in the direction of 'cyclic' mode in the matrix arpeggiator - I've been playing with it - very powerful and simple.
What would be fabulous would be the option of changing the cycle stack height - at present it's hard wired to cycle through the number of rows in the MatrixArpeggiator i.e. 12 - would it be possible to allow the user to define the number of rows that cyclic runs through or even better make this value modulatable?...
cheers,
Sam
You can use the individual row mutes in the matrix to limit which rows get assigned new notes -- not quite as convenient as a single param to modulate, but it does work. The individual row mute buttons can be modulated -- try putting LFO's on a few, it should be interesting...

Jim

That's really good.......Thanks Jim.....

Hi Jim,
thank you so much for the update. (actualy it's more than just an update). So many new possiblities... So much to play with...
But...
Will there be a possibility in future updates to save custom scales so that I can automate switching between scales like in the sequencer modules where I can assign modulation to the scale-parameter. Without this - or do I miss something - the module is not so useful to me.
Best wishes

Yes, I plan to have a scale library so you can add scales to the list that appears in the Note Sequencers.
In the meanwhile, you can use the ModuleSettings feature to create a chord library that you can easily access from the Custom Scale module itself. It does mean you have to put a CustomScale in each stack where you want to use those scales, but that isn't too hard to do....
Cheers,
Jim
